The EcoSchools Program

In 2002, the Toronto District School Board, inspired by the UN-endorsed Eco-Schools program (now in over 67 countries), developed the EcoSchools program for TDSB schools. EcoSchools is a comprehensive program that engages staff, students and parents in taking action to minimize waste, reduce energy consumption, green school grounds and promote ecological literacy - collaborating in the building of a healthy and sustainable future. Schools participate by forming committees to implement ideas in each of these areas earning certification at a bronze, silver, gold or platinum level.

In 2005, seven school boards, York University, and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority adapted the EcoSchools program and expanded it across the province. The program has grown from 108 certified schools in 2005 to 1,745 certified schools in 2015. As of 2018 there were 1895 schools across the province certified as EcoSchools. Multiple independent studies have been undertaken comparing Platinum Certified EcoSchools with non EcoSchools demonstrating the significant and cumulative impact of environmental initiatives taken at the classroom level.

EcoSchools, is now an award-winning certification program and the only voluntary certification program in Ontario that recognizes and celebrates schools for their environmental learning and action. In addition to school certification, the program delivers workshops and webinars to teachers, supports school board environmental representatives, hosts an annual conference, develops educational resources, and provide grants to schools and school boards.

Child and Nature Alliance

“The Child and Nature Alliance of Canada (CNAC) is a national, charitable organization committed to fostering meaningful connections to the outdoors for Canadian children and youth. We want children to have opportunities for quality outdoor play throughout their childhood, on a regular basis, over many seasons, in ALL weather. We believe that spending time outdoors in a repeated manner can improve childhood development and well-being.”
